A Great Start to our trip

We had a smooth early ride to the airport and checked in at our airline at Philadelphia International Airport and that's when we found out we were booked in FIRST CLASS for our two flights to Costa Rica. In no time we boarded our plane, especially since we could go through the priority boarding lane, and positioned ourselves in the comfy and spacious seats in first class, and sat back to enjoy our two flights to Costa Rica.

After we landed in Costa Rica, we met Jonathan, our tour guide for day 1. We met another group of travelers with the same company as us at the airport and then drove to our hotel in San José.

We checked into our hotel and were back on the bus within a half hour to tour the city of San José. Jonathan told us there are 110 volcanos in Costa Rica, but only 7 are active. We stopped in front of the National Stadium which was rebuilt 4 years ago with funding from China.  Jonathan also pointed out the Museo de Oro, el Teatro Nacional, and the residence of the former President of Costa Rica.

When the rain slowed to a light drizzle, we set out on foot to explore downtown. The streets were buzzing with vendors with a sing-song tune to sell their products, the smells of food sizzling on grills, and the flurry of activity of shoppers. Click HERE to hear the street sounds, including the vendors selling horns to use when watching Costa Rica play in the World Cup.

For a mid afternoon meal, we decided to forgo the American-based fast food restaurants and ate at a Costa Rica restaurant with a full menu of typical dishes of Costa Rica.

We returned to our hotel and met Giovanny, our tour guide for the remainder of the trip, had a little free time to relax, swim, or connect with parents back home, and ate a late evening meal.

During the group leader meeting with Giovanny, he suggested two additional tours: white water rafting and a crocodile tour. All members of the group voted to add these to our itinerary. Our fun-packed nine days in Costa Rica quickly became even more exciting and adventurous!

Before settling into our rooms for the night, Cole and Michael shopped in the nearby mercado for snacks and a ball.
